Verdura

Verdura is an unknown area on New Horizon, mostly unexplored by humans and Wafans. Verdura isn't really a continent by its own, because it's actually just an extension of the South Pole. However, excluding the landscape that is more visibly apart of the South Pole leaves us with an approximated area for Verdura that spans closely to 23 694 267 km2, which almost equals the size of the continent named Africa found on Luna (Earth).

Terraefauna

Terraefauna describe animals that live above the surface, for example in open terrain. This includes amphibians, reptiles, and mammals that live on land.

Grim Stalker

  • Fauna: Terraefauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, Aquilons Reach, Verdura.

Appearance:

Grim Stalkers are large shaggy eyeless creatures that vaguely resemble bears. They are typically well over 5 meters tall (even 10 meters on some rare occasions), and just as wide. Their ursine limbs end in three massive claws. They have extremely powerful jaws and claws, easily capable of mauling a Wafan. The thick hide is more like ceramic then actual tissue. Certain body points exhibit small segments of chitinous material.

Eating habits:

Grim Stalkers are the absolute pinnacle of evolution on New Horizon. Though biological, they are nearly invulnerable to harm from even the most sophisticated weapons. As they grow in age, they become more and more durable as they devour Wafans, and incorporate the metallic compounds into their physical structure. Grim Stalkers can devour metallic compounds and plastics just as easily as human meat.

Living environment:

Grim Stalkers are found on many places around New Horizon, but mostly on Youzem and Neo Titania. They are often found roaming the open landscape, and only when they are asleep can they be found inside a cave. Grim Stalkers are extremely dangerous and should not to be taken lightly.

Ravager

  • Fauna: Terraefauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, Aquilons Reach, New Chania, Verdura (virtually all known Biomes except subterranean and oceanic).

Appearance:

Ravagers are not the largest predators, but pound for pound not a single living creature on the planet is deadlier. Resembling a blunt nosed crocodile bastard offspring with a lion, and a long salamander liked webbed tail, these pebbly skinned creatures are hairless except for their long main, which has many long hairs, which will often whip majestically in the wind, and add an air of menace to them. Their numerous teeth are just above and below their gumline, like for many earthly reptiles. They come in almost every conceivable color. They're typically the size of a large Terrestrial dog on average, but can be as small as a beagle.

Eating habits:

Ravagers are relentless predators, whether in a pack, or on their own. Their vicious jaws are capable of tearing flesh and bone, synthetic skin and servo from Human and Wafan alike. Their appetites are scarcely voracious, and often a Ravager will follow prey for days merely because they aren't yet hungry enough to eat them, only to strike when their prey has grown complacent. Smaller, juvenile Ravagers will often move from carcass to carcass likes crows, eating carrion. Because of this, a group of Ravagers is called a Murder of Ravagers.

Living environment:

Much like Terrestrial wolves and coyotes, Ravagers can learn to hunt in virtually any terrain.

Cluster Crab

  • Fauna: Terraefauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, Aquilons Reach, New Chania, Verdura (any coastal regions).

Appearance:

Large land bound arthropods, quite similar to earthly Coconut Crabs. Like Coconut Crabs, they're entirely land bound creatures, with a large fat metathorax, and an immensely powerful pair of pinchers. They're almost as large as a full grown human adult. They come in an almost infinite variety of colors, and markings.

Eating habits:

Social creatures, Cluster Crab females lay eggs, and drive away all their female offspring, keeping their male for an entourage to hunt for them, and drag prey to their underground lairs in cliff sides and caves. Cluster Crab males only leave their nest to find a mate after their mother has died. Cluster Crabs can eat vegetables, animal or mineral with equal facility, but prefer red meat, and find humans to be quite tasty, and are capable of ripping a Wafan apart to get at the more appealing bits with their immensely powerful claws.

Living environment:

Found throughout the coastal regions of the world.

Crypto Scarab

  • Fauna: Terraefauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, New Chania, Verdura (any warm coastal regions).

Appearance:

Crypto Scarabs are large creatures, reminiscent of Earthly Scarabs, with immensely powerful beaks, and massively powerful skewering forelegs which can puncture even a Wafan's thickest armor plating with some repetition. Slightly smaller than an adult human in mass, these creatures' primary colors are dark metallic, typically red, blue or purple, but green and orange aren't unheard of. Their carapaces are rimmed with a golden metallic chitin. Their round heads, non-compound eyes and flush jaws give them a disturbingly human like face when their mouths are closed, and can look truly gruesome when open. They can fly for short distances, and their wings tend to be iridescent metallic shades which contrast their shell coat, and are primarily used for mating purposes.

Eating habits:

Crypto Scarabs eat any prey they can bring down, but prefer native life or Humans when they can get them. They will only mate during dry seasons, killing their prey, and laying their eggs in the carcass after soiling them, even going so far as creating funeral mounds of stones to protect the eggs of their young when they awaken in the wet season, and burrow their way free by feeding. Their eggs have been observed to be viable for as long as a decade until moisture brings them to life, much like terrestrial brine shrimp.

Living environment:

Found throughout the dry arid regions of the world which have wet springs.

Coelifauna

Coelifauna describe animals that live most of their time in the air. Not birds though, because no birds exist on New Horizon.

Bone Monger

  • Fauna: Coelifauna.

  • Region: Verdura.

Appearance:

This frightful creature doesn't move very fast on the ground, where its movement more resembles a crawl that an actual walk. However, once airborne this creature is as dangerous as it's intimidating. The Bone Monger is between 2-3 times the size of a humans or a Wafan. It weighs about 300-500 kilos and has a bony head with horns, a long hairy tail, two long legs and two winged arm with claws. Some rumors of larger specimen exist but have never been confirmed.

The Bone Monger (also known as the Grim Terror) is a distant cousin to the Grim Stalker. Bone Mongers are smaller than their cousins and probably not as savage or strong. However, if provoked, they are not afraid to attack anything within their reach which makes them very dangerous.

Bone Mongers are totally blind, but they are able to emit a unique high-pitched sound. Listening to the echoes, also known as sonar, they are able to locate their prey and other nearby objects with such an accuracy that some creatures with good eyesight can't even rival. This is the process of echolocation. Their senses of smell and hearing are also excellent.

Eating habits:

The Bone Monger is a monstrous creature, often found shrieking as they pierce through the air like a demon from hell. Soaring through the air it's able to "spot" the slightest movement on the ground. It thrusts itself down towards it and hits the ground with such a force that the ground trembles throwing dirt and stones all around in a massive shower. Not many creatures can survive a Bone Monger landing on its back with full force.

Bone Mongers are cunning hunters, who can stalk its prey for miles, communicating with each other, planning their attack closely and putting it flawlessly into action. Bone Mongers often hunt in packs, and together they can even defeat and kill a Grim Stalker. Their bravery is usually linear to the size of the pack, and except for the pack leader, a general Bone Monger usually avoids confrontation unless it's hungry or threatened.

Bone Monger, just like their cousins, can eat through anything from bone to metal.

Living environment:

Bone Mongers are only found on Verdura.

Dusk Hunter

  • Fauna: Coelifauna.

  • Region: Youzem (Aruzemar Plains, Nerehl), Verdura.

Appearance:

The Dusk Hunter is a combination of the most horrifying elements of a bat and an armadillo. By day Dusk Hunters wrap themselves in their pebbly skinned wings and resemble large boulders. At night they unfold themselves and reveal them to be enormous flying mammaloids who resemble grotesquely distorted bats. They're eyeless, like their nearest surviving relatives the Grim Stalkers. Unlike a bat, their face is slightly elongated, and their ears are highly mobile. Their teeth are the teeth of a predator.

Eating habits:

Dusk Hunters are vicious predators. They hunt during the night, flying, and carry off anything small enough to whatever cliff side or trail they use as a nest where they devour its prey. Those too large to eat out of hand, they lift to great height and drop as many times as necessary to make them cease struggling, and then subdue them with their powerful foot claws and teeth.

Living environment:

Temperate Forests and mountains.

Nemorisfauna

Nemorisfauna describe animals that live in forests, or even jungles. This includes amphibians, reptiles, and mammals that live above the water surface, specifically in any wooden area.

Arbor Strangler

  • Fauna: Nemorisfauna.

  • Region: Youzem (Narehl), Neo Titania (Perianth Peninsula), New Chania, Verdura.

Appearance:

The Arbor Strangler is one of the few instances of land bound gastropods found on New Horizon. A writhing mass of tentacles around a sack-like core, which contains an enormous vicious beak for tearing large portions from its prey, as well as two enormous golden eyes. It resembles an octopus as viewed through a nightmare. They're capable of swinging from tree to tree with relative ease. They come in a variety of colors and markings.

Eating habits:

They dwell in trees near shallow or deep water, waiting for prey to pass, than drop and crush them to death in place, or drag them to water to drown them before consumption. Smaller prey may be grabbed with their whip like tentacles.

Living environment:

Found throughout the forests of the world located near rivers or streams.

Aquaefauna

Aquaefauna describe any type of animals that live below the water surface, such as the ocean, in rivers or lakes. Any type of fish, or animal that have gills, belong to this category of fauna.

River Dragon

  • Fauna: Aquaefauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, New Chania, Verdura (any tropical area and temperate areas with suitably large rivers).

Appearance:

River Dragons are enormous, armor plated reptiles known to wallow in the rivers of New Horizon like crocodiles. Their resemblance to earthly dragons, despite their lack of wings or breathe fires, has led River Dragons and their entire genus to be named after them. River Dragons are roughly fifteen to thirty feet in length, but exceptional forty foot specimens are not unheard of. Their bodies are long and narrow, but quite muscular. Their necks are short and stocky, with a large head housing a brain large and complex enough to rival most of the higher primates. Their skin is leather, with massive sub-dermal bone patches which act as internal armor, as well as having rows of long irregular spines on their backs. They have an organ on their head which when engorged in blood becomes erect, and acts as an open air passageway, and can be used like a snorkel so they can stay submerged indefinitely. It's normally invisible, laying flat on their heads in a deep crease at its back.

Eating habits:

River Dragons live in their rivers, often lurking underwater, and attack any large herd animals which approach its river. It takes only the weakest of the herd, leaving only the strongest to escape. It disposes of the carcasses by burying them so as not to give away its location.

Living environment:

Found throughout the river systems of New Horizon tropical and temperate regions, though less common in mountain regions where Grim Stalkers are more common.

concept art by Udana

River Pirate

  • Fauna: Aquaefauna.

  • Region: Cain Ocean, Lansdale Ocean, Youzem, Verdura (any areas with suitably large rivers).

Appearance:

River Pirates are dangerous creatures that resemble something that's part alligator and part piranha. They have an alligator's tail but a piranhas head, and they can both swim and crawl up on land using their four small legs. They can move very fast on land, when they need to, and they move even faster swimming. River Pirates cannot breathe air, but they can "hold their breath" for up to an hour or so, but sooner or later they have to return to the water in order to survive. River Pirates normally live in the ocean, but they have been seen in rivers and on the shore of rivers on Youzem and Verdura. In fact, they are first seen climbing out of rivers, attacking people, stealing food or on occasion stealing a family pet animal or a small child. These vile acts are what gave them their name.

Eating habits:

River Pirates eat fish and other creatures living in the sea, but they like to crawl up on land and steel food or attack small animals, even children.

Living environment:

River Pirates live in large groups under the water. They live in the ocean, but some have been seen around the waterbeds in Youzem and Verdura.

Bestiolaefauna

Bestiolaefauna describe every insect that can be found on the planet, whether they live below or above the surface.

Appearance:

Eating habits:

Living environment:

Subterraneafauna

Subterraneafauna describe every animal that live exclusively (or most often at least) in caves or underground.

Neomole

  • Fauna: Subterraneafauna.

  • Region: Youzem, Neo Titania, Verdura.

Appearance:

Neomoles, also known as "Horizon Moles", are actually crustaceans, and they resemble earthly moles only in the way that they like to dig deep tunnels in the ground. They look like a cross between a lobster and a badger. They dig with a pair of forelegs with can tear through dirt at a frenzied rate, and their eye stalks are retracted back inside their head most of the time to protect them from sharp roots and stones of the soil. They're exoskeleton is very small, and covers little of their body. The whole creature is orange and brown, covered with fine black hairs. A Neomole can be as large as a small dog, and can spit very corrosive stomach acids with helps it to dig through solid matter.

Eating habits:

Neomoles are carnivorous, mostly eating worms and bugs.

Living environment:

Neomoles live in the soil of most continental areas of New Horizon, but they were first discovered on Neo Titania.
